Many of the determinants for happiness come from what people are spending on their government in taxes and what they are getting back. Because of this, the United States ranks 11th due to Social Security, the large military budget and other things. Northern Europeans seem to have the highest overall quality of life and they also have socialized health-care.
A recent article from CNNMoney.com estimates that the government has spent $8,887 per capita on bailing out the financial system since 2007. The US Census reports that the current population of the United States as of 11:18pm on April 8th, 2009 is 306,175,772. Multiplying these numbers tells us that the government has spent $2,720,984,085,764 of YOUR money in less than a year in half on helping the financial system get out of its slump.
