Opel to Cut Jobs Across Europe

From Aoife White, AP Business

General Motor Co.’s Opel plans to close a plant in Antwerp Belgium as well as cut 8,300 jobs across Europe. The brunt of the job cuts will be in Germany where 4,000 will be laid off.

The downsizing is a “tough reality” of a shrinking auto market as fewer cars are sold during the global recession. European car markets are likely to sell 1.5 million less cars than in 2009. 4 Million less than 2007.

"Some cried, some said finally, at least we know what we are up against, what our future is going to be," Werner Dillen, a spokesman for the Opel Antwerp trade union told Associated Press television.
